Long Island
Renowned conservationist Sigurd Olson maintained a
writing cabin at Listening Point on Burntside Lake,
Minnesota, near the entrance to today’s Boundary
Water Canoe Area Wilderness. There he forged his
notion that wildlands provide spiritual experiences vital
to modern civilization. In 2004, a 43-acre island visible
from Listening Point came on the market, and TPL
purchased it to hold until federal funds for its protection became available. In October, TPL added Long
Island to Superior National Forest. Photo: Darcy Kiefel

Brook Preserve
The Mendham Borough, New Jersey, open space master
plan envisions a loop trail network that will connect
borough parklands to the Morris County trail system
known as Patriots’ Path. TPL recently helped the borough protect 107 acres that will serve as a hub for the
trail network while preserving critical wildlife habitat,
mature forest, and the headwaters of McVickers Brook,
an important tributary of the Raritan River.
